Dental and Oral Surgery
The most common dental surgery in dogs and cats is the extraction of one or more teeth. There are numerous reasons that an extraction would be recommended, such as if a tooth was decayed, fractured, or abscessed. These teeth can not only be painful, but can provide an easy path for bacteria to travel to the bloodstream. Extraction is recommended to eliminate these problems, or head them off when possible. If teeth need to be extracted, it is usually done in conjunction with a full dental cleaning. Most pets will have no problem eating dry food again after their gums have healed.
Other commonprocedures include the repair of fractured jaws, and the removal of oral tumors.
