Heartworm and Flea preventatives are recommended year round, especially in Texas. Our state has one of the highest rates of heartworm infection in the nation, as well as a climate that the fleas and ticks thrive in.
Heartworm disease affects both dogs AND cats, and is transmitted by mosquitoes all year long. This means that even indoor pets can be infected, and that it is important not to stop giving a preventative in the winter.
Fleas are a nuisance, and can cause severe health problems and allergic reactions in some pets. The best treatment for fleas is continual prevention; otherwise you may be surprised when you suddenly have a flea population that is overwhelming both your pet and your home.
